The community’s ponds and open spaces are framed within the majestic Colorado Rockies. While fishing, anglers enjoy panoramic views of the area’s most recognizable mountains, including Byers Peak, the Bear Claw, and the Continental Divide.

The cool, fertile ponds provide prime habitat for trout to live and grow. Several species of aquatic insects, including mayflies, caddis, and midges, provide ample forage for the fish to feed upon. There is also an abundance of grasshoppers in the area meadows every summer, and the trout definitely take notice. When the hoppers jump or are blown into the ponds, the fish greedily gulp them right off the surface!

There have been confirmed reports of fish as big as 18 inches being caught, though there are rumors of fish in the ponds growing even bigger than that. Who knows when that next Grand Park trout you hook into could be a trophy!

The palomino trout, a rare genetic strain of bright yellow rainbow trout, also inhabits the ponds. Grand Park is one of the few places that give you the chance to fish for these uniquely beautiful trout.

Pond access is available only to Grand Park residents, which means the waters receive relatively light fishing pressure. The hungry rainbows are often eager to bite, but can be even tougher to actually land. The strong, feisty fish put up quite a fight on a fly rod, complete with acrobatic jumps out of the water and frantic sprints deep into the pond’s depths. The ponds offer a fun challenge for both novice and expert anglers alike!

There are also several fly-fishing shops in the Winter Park and Fraser areas, so you’ll never have to go far for all the right flies and equipment.

Indeed, Grand Park’s ponds offer some of the best high country trout fishing in Colorado. Fishing is just one of the many activities you can enjoy, in addition to lots of hiking, biking, skiing, shopping, dining, and other opportunities – and all within a stone’s throw of your beautiful mountain home in Grand Park!
